A popular belief in Louis Pasteur's day was Spontaneous Generation. This belief was based on the assumption that decaying matter could spawn living matter. In four simple experiments performed in 1864, Pasteur proved that life must come from life. All experiments were conducted by beginning with a sterile broth. (All living matter in the broth were destroyed by heat.)
